During the next two weeks, Google will roll out the new feature. It will appear on the right side of the Gmail interface and shows a picture of the person whose email you’re reading, a short paragraph summarizing the last email you received from that person, subjects from emails from the past month, an abbreviated calendar showing availability, and documents that person has recently created.

Blackberry refuses Bhutan

“They were unwilling and Bhutan is not a part of their business policy,” said Tashi Tshering, the executive director of Tashi InfoComm. He added that ‘they’ might be interested in the future.

BlackBerry users in Bhutan will have to wait longer to activate and use all features in the phone, as the company has turned down proposals from the two local providers to open up service centers in the country.The hi-tech phone has reasoned the small and unviable market in Bhutan as an excuse for declining the proposal.

The Bhutan Telecom had approached BlackBerry to get the authentication server in a meeting held in Barcelona, Spain, earlier this year to which they received a straight ‘No’. The Tashi InfoComm had also written to the company to which they received a similar response.

According to the general manager of B-Mobile Pushpa Mani Pradhan, all BlackBerry features can be used only if the company launches in Bhutan.“We have customers using BlackBerry handsets and many features of the hi-tech phone does work here but the e-mail facility is not accessible,” he said.

Today, I was taking training on Google Pack. I was with the aim that I could train student @Royal Thimphu College in using the Google products efficiently. I started with simple mailing to manage the whole mails, using Calendar for creating events, using documents, excel, power point , online forms and also storing in the files in Gmail’s. The best part for students was to use the Google grouping mails for the forums and creating sites.

But during this time, I was stuck with a questions that, we use lots of Google product and the idea behind is to store data. Now how do I know what all are the data stores in different Google products. Thanks to Google, it has a open in the account setting to view the dashboard for this features.

Being an open source player, every one will be familiar with the DB called MYSQL. But every time we start becoming closer to have a move with the DB, we need to know also "How we can take BackUp the DB and Restore Back." I mean when i started every-time with my new project, i face difficult in backing up the Whole DB, Particular DB, Sometime backing up the specific Table of the DB. We can do easy and handy if we have PHPMYADMIN Panel. But some time while working with the remote server we won't have this PANEL..So How shall we do it.. After some goggling i got the stuff.. I have explain below:-

BACKING UP
1. Particular Database:-
mysqldump -u xxx -p xxx DB-Name > /path for storage/new backup name;
mysqldump -u root -p xxx dbname > /home/administrator/dump/demodummy.sql;

2. Particular Table:-
mysqldump -u xxx -p xxx DB-Name Table-Name > /path for storage/new backup name;
mysqldump -u root -p xxx dbname studentdetails> /home/administrator/dump/demodummy2.sql;

Note: Make sure while taking the dump, we should not be inside the mysql. We need to be in shell.

Restoring UP

1. Particular Database:-
mysql -u xxx -p xxx DB-Name < /source path of the file/demodummy.sql;
mysql -u xxx -p xxx dbname < /home/administrator/dump/demodummy.sql;

2. Particular Database:-
mysql -u xxx -p xxx DB-Name < /source path of the file/demodummy.sql;

Sometimes, you want to delete a whole bunch of users, terms, or nodes, say to cleanup a site while developing and still keep its configuration, so reinstalling is not really an option, and the normal content- or user-administration pages get in your way because they only show a limited number of entries, meaning you have to delete page after page of entries.

Of course, you could just use node_delete or user_delete in D6, user_cancel in D7, and loop on all values. But there is a simpler way: just install devel module, and enable its devel_generate submodule.

The main purpose of devel_generate, as its name indicates, is to create content, be it nodes, terms or users. However, much like you use the Start button on Windows to Stop the OS, you can use devel generate to delete content instead of creating it, by enabling its optional Delete all content in these node types before generating new content checkbox. If you then choose to generate 0 entries, you'll get just a nice cleanup, without content generation, and nothing to write.

And for you Drush users, there's even an additional bonus: devel_generate has a Drush plugin implementing three equivalent commands: drush generate users|content|taxonomy. These three commands take as parameter the number of entries to generate, plus a "kill" option, which is here to remove existing content in the same way the checkbox specifies in the UI.

I always used to use FCK Editor and its been a long time i didn't switch to a new one. But one day one of my client told me that he don't want to use FCK Editor as it is obsolete. So i was bit confused in choosing the editor. The confusion is not about the new adaptation to new editor but its configuration.

I have chosen CKEditor which is the next version of FCKeditor. The editor has been rebranded and completely rewritten. It is now much faster (the code has been optimized), loads faster (the number of files has been reduced, so the browser will perform less HTTP requests) and developers friendly.

You should be keeping in mind that if you desire to have the upload option from the editor than one need to be familiar with image browser or ckfinder. I have implemented image browser in fckeditor. But i faced tough time in implementing image browser in CKEditor. So i decided to use CKFinder in the CKEditor.

Make sure after you download the CKEditor and configure it , you should refer readme text file found inside the ckeditor module.

Customize Drupal's 'read more' teaser link placement on Drupal 6

Here's a standalone module that provides the handy customization described at AngryDonuts.com. You can see it in use on this site.

It offers administrator options (at admin/settings/ed_readmore) to enable / disable the tweak, and control placement of the read more link.

You can tweak your css file to provide greater control over the read more link formatting. For example, I use this to prevent the read more link wrapping when it's at the right margin:

span.read-more { white-space: nowrap; font-weight:bold; font-style:italic;}

Compatibility

The module is designed to work with Drupal 4.7, Drupal 5, and Drupal 6, running PHP4 or PHP5.

Usage notes

Install ed_readmore.module as usual: create a modules/ed_readmore directory, unpack the files there. Then, enable the ed_readmore module.

Here's a handy PHP snippet to purge user accounts for all users who haven't created any nodes on your site. It's useful when you have a lot of users who have signed but haven't created any nodes.

Drupal Blocks for a Multilingual Site

We sometimes use “Drupal Blocks” to create a multilingual site. The logic is straight forward for every content type in question create a block element . For example for the content type news_english you will need to create a block element called news_english. Once you have created such a block element you will also need to create a logic inside the theme file for that specific block. For example if the block news_english is under block Top Left . You might have a file in your theme such as block-leftTop.tpl.php

And you can put such a code inside this file to only show a specific language of a given block

How to Backup a Drupal Site

This is one of the easiest to back up the Drupal for migrating.It is easiest because even clients can backup their own websites. Download and install Drupal's Backup and Migrate Module. Then go to admin > content > Backup & Migrate and follow the directions. Basically, you can just click a button and backup your entire Drupal database with only the data you want to keep. The unnecessary data from the cache and accesslog tables aren't backed up so the file size of the backups is smaller than it would be if doing a mysqldump.

Here are 10 reasons why you should seriously be considering Drupal for your SEO-based Web development projects.

Advanced URL Control — Unlike WordPress, Drupal gives you precise control over URL structure. Each item of content in Drupal (called a node) can be given a custom URL (called a URL alias). In WordPress you are generally limited to one type of permalink URL for all posts. You can override the "post slug", but it's much less precise than Drupal's URL aliases. You can also automate custom URL structures for each different content type with the Pathauto Module. There are other open-source alternatives to Drupal, but here are a few reasons why I think that Drupal is better:

Joomla - It's not as search engine friendly out of the box as Drupal.
Plone - It''s powerful, but Plone is written in Python and has certain server requirements. It is not as easy to extend as Drupal, and it's harder to find people who know Python than who know PHP. Plone runs on the powerful, but complex, Zope 2.
WordPress - WordPress is excellent, but if you need something more heavy-duty or are building a site that you might want to extend in the future you should be considering Drupal.

What I think they fail to understand is that by blocking the live cricket scoring sites they are actually making the employees more curios and provoking them to hunt for proxy networks or listen to the radio or chat with their friends elsewhere.

Jokes apart, you actually don’t need proxy networks to view the live cricket scores if you at least have access to Google. If you want to find the latest info about all the cricket matches then just type,

7. Calculate with your browser

Every OS has a calculator inbuilt but when the browser is the thing which is constantly open whey bother to open up a calculator. Open Google and straight away type your mathematical expression. You can go all the way frombasic arithmetic to trigonometrical expressions. This is simply amazing stuff accomplished by Google.

8. Compare your currency with others

Now that the dollar is declining, the rest of the world must be busy trying to check the impact of the dollar on their currencies. But first of all one must know how much a particular currency amounts to when cashed in another currency. Google’s inbuilt currency converter just does this.

This is most interesting trick. You might be needing images for various occasions and searching for images is the most difficult thing because what we expect might not be possibly mapped to a query. Suppose I search for the term “happy” then the Google results page displays smileys. But I would like to use images of happy people. Even if I choose the term as “happy face” the results don’t show images which contain people. For this there is a parameter “imgtype” which you can use with the URL. For this put in the URL as follows:

There are many more variations which can be bought about with the above tricks thus making your search experience not only enriching but also exciting. If I have missed any tricks of common usage, feel free to mention it.

Tertiary menu in Drupal

By default, Drupal allows you to set a “primary” menu and a “secondary” menu. At this point you should know that if you go to admin-> menus -> settings and pick the same menu for both primary and secondary links, the secondary links menu will contain the sub-menu of the selected item in the primary menu.

What happens if you have three levels of menus?

Problem: the lack of a tertiary menu

What happens if you have three levels of menus? For example, what happens if your menu looks like this:

- —Two one B

…ecc.? PHPTemplate will create a two nice variables for you, $primary_links and secondary_links. Also, $secondary_links will contain the “right” entries if you set the primary menu and the secondary menu the same. What about $tertiary_links? Nowhere to be seen.

Searching for a solution

If you search the forums about this topic, you will find the most diverse solutions. They all take considerable efforts. The first question you want to ask is: how does the template generate those links? If you look at themes/engines/phptemplate/phptemplate.engine, and look for the string primary_links, you will find:

'primary_links'       => menu_primary_links(),
...
'secondary_links'     => menu_secondary_links(),

If you search Drupal’s codebase for those functions:

Greatly improve the speed of Firefox

We all know Firefox is a memory hog. To speed things up greatly, do the following:

1. Open Firefox and in the address bar type about:config.

2. Click on “I’ll be careful, I promise“

3. Use the search bar above to look for network.http.pipelining and double click on it to set it’s value to True.

4. Create a new boolean value named network.http.pipelining.firstrequest and set that to True, as well.

5. Find network.http.pipelining.maxrequests, double click on it, and change its value to 8.

6. Look for network.http.proxy.pipelining and set it to True.

7. Create two new integers named nglayout.initialpaint.delay and content.notify.interval, set them to 0.

8. Restart your browser.

All done. You should feel the browser is 5x more responsive than before while navigating websites.]

Disable error reporting to the screen on a production site in Drupal

By default, Drupal error logging happens to the log database (the watchdog table) and the screen. This is something I had overlooked for quite a while untill I stumbeled upon it while setting the error pages.

Error logging to the screen is quite ugly on a production site. Your visitors don't understand what's happening. It happend to me a few times on sites where I enabled page caching. The client notified me of the error messages so I disabled the caching without know I had the option to disable the error logging to the screen.
So how is this done?
The best solution for this problem is just to make sure you don't have errors in your site. That's utopia. But there's a better solution.
Go to Administer > Site configuration > Error reporting (admin/settings/error-reporting). There you have a dropdown list under 'Error reporting' with the two choices you have for the error logging, being:

Write errors to the log.

The page even contains a hint to guide you in the right direction:
Where Drupal, PHP and SQL errors are logged. On a production server it is recommended that errors are only written to the error log. On a test server it can be helpful to write logs to the screen.
Just choose 'Write errors to the log.' and your visitiors won't be bugged by (to them) meaningless error messages.

Display login form for anymous users when 'access denied'

When a user requests a page he's not allowed to see, he gets an 'Access denied' page with the message 'You are not authorized to access this page. '.

Sometimes the user has access to the page but he hasn't logged in yet. So to make the user's life easier, you provide him with a login form on the 'access denied' page so he can login immediately and gets redirected to the page he requested originally.

How do you do this?

Start by creating a new Page (node of type Page). Set the input format for the body to 'PHP code'. Start typing the message you want to give to the user, something like 'This page is restricted to logged in users. Please provide your credentials below.'.

You then display the login form my typing the following code below your message (or anywhere you want to put the login form):

print drupal_get_form('user_login');

If you also want the 'Create new account' and 'Request new password' links under your form you can use the login block by typing the following code instead of the previous:

print drupal_get_form('user_login_block');

Yup, your page is done. But you won't be able to see it since you are logged in right now. So to test your page log out and go to your page. If you don't know the drupal path of your page, go to Administer > Content Management > Content to find it.
To finish setting up your page, you have to tell Drupal to use your new page as the 'Access denied' page. You can do this by going to Administer > Site configuration > Error reporting and providing the drupal path of your new page for the 403 page.

I was having a requirement where i need to have a audio file to play form the file field in Drupal. It was really a tough time finding out the solution and finally go through it. i am giving some reference to some website from where this article has been written.

- Flexibility & Power: Drupal looks significantly more powerful — much more flexible. Looks like Views, CCK, Panels give Drupal a huge advantage over Joomla. You simply can’t get that flexibility with Joomla. Joomla developers design around their own paradigm with very little flexibility. You can get up and running much quicker with Joomla, but you will hit the wall sooner or later.

Performance
- In my initial tests, Drupal blows away Joomla. With the new version of Joomla, the good template makers junk them up with gee-whiz gadgets that are not suitable for the enterprise

Learning Curve
- Joomla is far easier to get up and running. Even with all the free videos, blogs, etc, Drupal is still a lot more challenging. Big oppty for comprehensive business business/enterprise book/education

Templates
Joomla wins by a huge margin. For example, companies like Joomlart, Joomlashack do a good job. Drupal theme companies are simply horrific. What’s needed is a Template strategy that emulates the requirements for the top web sites in the country and, bundles modules, blocks etc. that work out-of-the-box to give businesses a head-start. For example, with our Websphere Portal product, we deliver incredible Themes/Skins that are rock solid and professional with no fuss or muss. I think you guys have a good stated strategy, but you’re missing a big oppty to deliver what enterprises really need.

Your templates are the best I’ve seen, but, an enterprise that is just getting started with Drupal will still have a huge ramp to climb to get a News site, mag site, etc. to look good. Joomlart delivers their Teline II template with a special install that gives you all the sample data, all the components in place — everything in place.

Finally, the biggest problem with Drupal templates is that the developers completely miss one of the key elements that any evaluator looks at: the menu system. If you don’t have a professional navigation system on your web site, you’re perceived as a low quality site. The other top items: Layout, Graphics, speed are also critical, and Drupal developers don’t seem to care. Exception:

Code developers
Based on my limited review, it looks Drupal coders are much more professional, skilled, disciplined. Good Joomla coders are rare. Must have something to due with the Drupal culture. I’m sure the Joomla devs are just as capable, they just don’t institute the same rigor

Admin
Drupal’s backend admin functionality is bad. The front end, backend separation is tenuous and confusing. Joomla is far better.

Content Management
- Drupal’s taxonomy system is excellent. Joomla’s "straight-jacket" approach (Content items confined to one Section/Category) is poor. Joomla’s admin console is much easier to organize, find content. Joomla’s WYSIWYGPro is better than the options available for Drupal.

Content Presentation
- Drupal’s tools are very, very good — they don’t come close to the built-in power of IBM tools — but they’re light years better than Joomla. I like CCK, Views, but wonder why they aren’t part of the code base. Seems odd. WIth Joomla, you have to acquire components that will meet 60-80% of your needs. For example, iJoomla has a tremendous news component, but it will never meet the capabilities of Drupal’s CCK, Views, etc.

Multitier Deployment
I’m shocked that there are no good tutorials, articles, education on the proper method for implementing Dev, Test, Staging, Dev environments. Drupal and Joomla communities both suffer from this. Also, basic backup and restore is not addressed adequately. The Drupal community is clueless on this. Joomla at least has two good solutions. If I decide to recommend Drupal for a production site, I’l recommend use Xcloner from Joomlaplug — this product will work with Drupal and does backup and restore of the site and the SQL db.

Summary to Date

- Use Joomla if you want to get nice looking site up quickly and can deal with a slower system, rigid content categorization and limited design/configuration options.
- Use Drupal if you want high performance, scalability, good content management and significant design flexibility. But, be prepared to spend a lot of time/money to get the site to look professional.

This note which i am writing as per with the view that i have a virtual hosting in my localhost. After i created a virtual host, only the index page appears, when ever i tried to navigate to other page , this error pops out:

What i did to solve is that i have edit the htaccess file in my virtual host, like this :-

Cannot upload big dump files (memory, HTTP or timeout problems)

The first things to check (or ask your host provider to check) are the values of upload_max_filesize, memory_limit and post_max_size in the php.ini configuration file. All of these three settings limit the maximum size of data that can be submitted and handled by PHP. One user also said that post_max_size and memory_limit need to be larger than upload_max_filesize.

Grep is a command line tool that allows you to find a string in a file or stream. It can be used with Regular expression to be more flexible at finding strings.

How To Use grep

In the simplest case, grep can simply be invoked like this :

% grep 'STRING' filename

This is OK but it does not show the true power of grep. First this only looks at one file. A cool example of using grep with multiple file would be to find all files in a directory that contains the name of a person. This can be easily accomplished using a grep in the following way :

% grep 'Nicolas Kassis' *

Notice the use of single quotes; the quotes are not essential, but in this example they are required because the name contains a space. Double quotes could also have been used in this example.

Now lets use some regular expressions...

grep can search for complicated patterns to find what you need. Here is a list of some of the special characters used to create a regular expression:

But as the beginner in linux world i was having a tough time in installing drupal in ubuntu. I thought its going to have a same way as we install in window, but is little twist in the permission setting.

Follow the steps mention below:

1. Download the drupal

2. Unzip it and place it.

3. run the install file

4. copy the default.setting.php to setting.php

5. Create a folder called files inside the default folder

Note: In normal installation procedure, the files directory will be created. But in ubuntu world the permission needed in order to create, as by default the permission is not given to the sites folder for writing.

6. Set permission for the folder called files, setting.php and deflaut.setting.php.

7. Go ahead with install file.

Playing custom video in lightbox

I was using Drupal for while and i got a requirement where i need to list down the file uploaded with the option to view the video upload. So for this i have faced the problem is how do i play the video in the light box. In my previous post i have written about the swf tool. I mean do install the swf tool having the JW Player. In a page do add up the php code to list down the video uploaded. You can use the api called theme if you want to show up in tabular format. before we move forward do have the lightbox install.

1. In my code i have added directly the hard code to the video tag for playing out in light box:
-> In the anchor tag do add the lightbox and its attributes like :-
rel="lightvideo[|width:640px;height:496px;][my caption]" href="/sites/all/themes/mytheme/video/mymovie.mov"

2. I have used the basic flashwars in lightbox setting of video setting autoplay :- autoplay=1&playerMode=normal.

warning: Parameter 2 to flowplayer3 swftools flashvars()

While the php version has been upgraded, the swf tools for playing the flv video has been so difficult to make a video to play.

The problem faced by the people regarding the swf tool has been discussed over here http://drupal.org/node/646458#comment-2694416 . Even i have gone through and tried to changed the solution but could not do it. I was having this error warning: Parameter 2 to flowplayer3_swftools_flashvars() expected to be a reference, value given in C:\wamp\www\drupal-6.14\includes\module.inc on line 450.

Finally i got to go back to have some dirty code:

Rather than remove the pass by reference and break the ability of FlowPlayer3 to over-ride the embedding, which is a necessary capability to support some advanced FP3 things that are coming, I've written an alternative function to call the hook, in a similar vein to user_module_invoke. It's a little simpler because we know the module we're calling.

Upshot is that passing by reference now works without any complaints from PHP. This code is on branch DRUPAL-6--3 as I anticipate this is where the next release will come from. To implement the fix manually to an existing SWF Tools installation change line 500 in swftools.module from:

Specifying the Document Root for the Apache2 HTTP Server

The Document Root is the directory where the Apache HTTP server takes files for displaying in the browser. The Document Root is specified in the file that defines your virtual host. The default virtual host configuration file is

We recommend that you create your own virtual host and enable it

instead of editing the default one.

Creating the Document Root Location

Choose Places > Home Folder.
From the context menu, choose Create Folder.

Creating the Login Form in the Horizontal Way +DRUPAL

Some of the time we want to have a LOGIN FORM in the HORIZONTAL WAY. I am sure we will first striking our brain with the word...CSS. Of course we can do it. But Drupal its self have the way to do so why don't we crack it. For example see the sample site : http://www.ohmybaby.in/ Here you will see the login form in the horizontal way. Here we need to tell our theme to look for new template for login block. For that we need to create a new login block template file and render the form elements inside that. Follow the steps:-

Step 1 :
Create a file called “user-login-block.tpl.php” in the following directory

Step 2:

Showing left and right region on page not found + DRUPAL

Drupal has it's own system to handle "Page not found" errors. It uses a simple function, called drupal_not_found to set the correct headers, etc. That function calls theme_page to do its rendering.
The catch here is that it calls theme_page with the $show_blocks argument set to FALSE. This means blocks in the left and right columns won't be shown here.

In some cases, you might not want this behavior. You might have your navigation in one of these sidebars and you want to give your visitors some way out of this page. The navigation might get the person back on track.
How can we fix this? Very simple. Put the following code in your page preprocessing function.

Installing DRUPAL in Windows:

The first things we have to do before we install Drupal is the download this open source software with the latest version from www.drupal.org. If you have the WAMP then we have to go to the PHP Admin in order to create a database for the Drupal. While creating the database just we need to write the database name and click create. The caution is, do not change any setting in the PHP Admin while creating database.

Before we go and install it we need to have one very important setting in the WAMP Server. That is we need to open up the WAMP Server->click to the Apache and we will see Apache Modules in which a hundred of modules are appearing. From there we have to make sure that the module called rewrite_module is check. This is because it helps you to have clean URL in the DRUPAL.

As the all the setting in the WAMP is over, now take the downloaded software, unzip it and drop it to the www folder inside the WAMP Server. Once the folder is transferred inside the WWW folder, we need to open up the local host and navigate the folder were we have saved the Drupal software.

From the screen we need to click or navigate the link called Install Drupal in English. Once it is click, the next window appears with an error. Just don't get panic go the sites ->default->settings.php.

The pasting has to be done in the little different manner. As we go inside the folder sites ->default->we will see the presence of the file called defaultsetting.php. Simple copy this file and paste it in over there and change the name as setting.php.

Once you have done it, go back to local host and refresh it. The screen will be change and will be displaying database configuration. Here we need to enter the database name which we have created in the beginning of our notes. The database username will be root and the password will be empty. I mean we should enter anything in the password section. There is an advanced option which we should not be touching it. Now just save it and the screen will display the progress of Drupal installation.

Next screen will be the configuring the site.Now in this page we need to give the site name. The name which you desire will be displayed in the top of your page. The site email address means if any viewer writes the email to this web site will be redirected this email id. Just below to it we need to register the administrator for the account of this page along with the valid password and the email id. The setting which is not mandatory is choosing the time. If we have set in the beginning the module option in apache than no need to set the enable or disenable the clean URL.Now just click save and continue they will show you message that the Drupal installation is over. Along with it an error will be displayed stating that we do not have a mail server. Just neglect it and click to the navigation called YOUR NEW SITE. You will see your site. Visit the administer and go on playing it.

The day when i started to be an internet savvy and started with the web 2.0 world...i came across with DRUPAL world and been touch with it till today.. So what so ever i have learned and will be learning i would like to share to the reader who will come across my blog. When i turn back and see I stand with no ideas.. a blank paper.. now i have a word to write in this blank paper.. I mean i was nothing in the drupal world.. but i learned through some blogs and site.
